What was your favorite subject in school?

My all time favourite subject in school, would you believe, was literature.

This is a little out of the left field, however, I had one of the best and most passionate teachers for the subject, Mr Long.

Every week Mr Long would engage us in an array of creative pieces that captivated the entire class. He would showcase theatrical performances for Shakespearean works, perfectly depicting and explaining all aspects of prose so our pubescent minds could comprehend. This is just one of the ways he went all out for his students.

But what really stood out to me was the tri-weekly ‘lit-nics’ (literature picnics). Lit-nics only happened once every three weeks and were the envy of every other class. We could bring in our favourite snacks as we watched artistic films, poetry or stage plays. It was a time to relax and learn the importance of analysing and critiquing literature in all its forms.

These literature classes broadened my analytical horizons and exposed me to how the written word can be adapted into beautiful and meaningful pieces.

It was through this incredible and unforgettable exposure to the creative arts that drove me to study literature at university, and pursue writing in all its forms. Afterall, you should see my personal library.
